SUMMARY:D&T Grom: Surf Camp w/Kooks and Kahunas
DESCRIPTION:Men 16+ \nAll creeds welcome \nAdventure Score: 1 \nDust and Tribe started in California. Many of us have lived our whole lives with the Pacific Ocean as our playground. But we’ve spent a lifetime on the sand. \nWe’re going to change that with the help of Kooks and Kahunas\, our local Muslim surf club. These aren’t just guys chasing waves. They are a committed group of spiritual seekers who understand that\, for all of the ocean’s power and immensity\, each wave that rolls in might hold the ride of a lifetime for exactly one person. \nThe universe is a big place. But you’re in it and there’s a reason. And sometimes you just need to suit up and float in the darkness for awhile before any of it makes sense. \nThere’s a whole lot more to surfing than surfing\, bro. \nFriday is our gathering day. We’ll get our beach camp sorted and learn about one another over dinner. After a night’s rest\, we’ll have breakfast\, handle our predawn prayers\, and hit the beach for some safety instruction and basic preliminaries including board selection\, waxing\, and where to attach that pesky leg leash (hint: your leg). Then it’s into the water where we learn to find the “sweet spot” for our paddle-out and some practice belly-boarding in. You’ll be paired with a mentor who\, although not a formal instructor\, is passionate about surfing and invested in sharing that love with you. \nFrom there it’s back to the sand where we’ll practice our pop-ups until we’re feeling confident enough to try standing in the water. \nWe’ll have two nights and two days on the beach. After the first morning\, the rest of our time together is about practice and the camaraderie that comes out of learning together. \nBest case scenario\, we show up kooks and come home kahunas. \nBut don’t count on it. Better to focus on the good times we’ll have. With God’s help and permission\, we can pretty well guarantee that. \nIncluded: \n\nTwo nights of camping at San Mateo Campground\nSurfboard and wetsuit\nSurf mentoring by the Kooks and Kahunas Muslim Surf Club\nBreakfast\, dinner\, and light refreshments (you’re on your own for lunch)\nPoint-by-point itinerary\, packing list\, and personalized assistance with logistics\nCommemorative D&T keepsake to honor our time together\nNew friends and a lifetime of memories!\n\nYou are responsible for your transportation\, clothing\, and gear (limited rentals are available). \n Those with their own board and wetsuit will receive an $80 discount upon balance fulfillment. \nCOVID-19: We are committed to keeping all participants healthy through smaller groups and the implementation of rigorous medical pre-screening. Once gathered\, social distancing and the wearing of masks will neither be enforced nor discouraged. \nBook your spot with a 50% deposit ($180) that is fully refundable up to 60 days prior to our trip (refund deadline Monday 7/17/2023). Refunds will not be offered after the aforementioned date except in cases of a documented or suspected COVID infection within 14 days of our event. \n\n \nQuestions? SUMMARY:D&T Treks: Velma Lakes
DESCRIPTION:Men and women 13+ \nAll creeds welcome \nAdventure Score: 2 \nLake Tahoe’s Desolation Wilderness is an alpine wonderland. Massive conifers stab out from great walls of granite. Stony basins hold pristine lakes\, refreshing pools of azure wherein dart brook and rainbow trout. This is world-class backpacking. \nWe’re not going far\, but we are going hard. It’s only 5 miles to the Upper Velma Lake\, but make no mistake: you’ll work for it. \nThis is an out-and-back trail with lots of climbing and some brutal switchbacks\, but that’s just one day and we’ll need an early start to beat the summer heat. We know that with hardship there is ease\, and in this case the payoff is glorious. \nAt the end of all that work are some of the prettiest little lakes you ever will see and that’s where we’ll spend the next two nights\, God willing. We’ll explore\, swim\, fish (don’t forget your license!)\, and just take in the refreshment of radiant sunshine\, clean air\, and cool water. \nWe’re opening this adventure up to some of our younger participants with the understanding that they have the maturity to take direction and behave responsibly. And to make the trip easier for those coming from a distance\, we are including an overnight stay Friday August 4th at D&T Camp One in Placerville\, about 1.5 hours from the trailhead. \nIncluded: \n\nOvernight accommodations and meal at Dust and Tribe Camp One (optional)\nTwo nights of camping alongside the Velma Lakes\nPoint-by-point itinerary\, packing list\, and personalized assistance with logistics\nCommemorative D&T keepsake to honor our time together\nNew friends and a lifetime of memories!\n\nYou are responsible for your family’s food\, transportation\, clothing\, and gear (limited rentals are available). \nCOVID-19: We are committed to keeping all participants healthy through smaller groups and the implementation of rigorous medical pre-screening. Once gathered\, social distancing and the wearing of masks will neither be enforced nor discouraged. \nBook your spot with a $100 deposit that is fully refundable up to 30 days prior to our trip (refund deadline Monday 7/6/2023). Refunds will not be offered after the aforementioned date except in cases of a documented or suspected COVID infection within 14 days of our event. \n\n \nDon’t want to hassle with food? We’re happy to put together a 2000 calorie/day vegetarian meal bundle to get you through the weekend. The bundle includes pasta and quinoa-based entrees\, oatmeal\, granola\, and lots of chocolate\, nut-butters\, and fat-rich coconut strips to fuel your adventure. \n\n\n  \nQuestions? SUMMARY:D&T Kin: Wheels of Fire!
DESCRIPTION:Open to men\, women\, and children (all ages) \nAll creeds welcome \nAdventure Score: 2 \nThe word “volcano” derives from the Ancient Roman worship of Vulcan\, with whom they associated both the destructive and regenerative powers of fire. \nWe know better. \nGod is One\, and His attributes encompass the mighty and the merciful. It is He who created the volcanoes\, portals of infernal brimstone from which the Earth belches and exhales both beauty and devastation. And this summer\, we are taking our families over 1200 miles north along a Trail of Fire\, tracking the volcanic history of the Great Pacific Northwest. \nWe’ve got room for 50 people\, and you’re invited. \nRegistration deadline 6/8/2023! \nWe start our trip the morning of Saturday\, July 8th at D&T Camp One in Placerville\, CA. Feel free to swing by the day before. Just let us know you’re coming and we’ll make sure you’ve got a place to stay and a hot meal to tuck you in. \nOur first stop is Lassen Volcanic National Park where we will spend a day and a night exploring the geothermal activity of the dynamic and shifting landscape. \nThe morning of July 9th will see us in the city of Redding for coffee and breakfast before heading to the lovely town of Dunsmuir\, where the water is reputed to be the cleanest on earth. \nFrom there we head out for a day hiking the mystical slopes of Mount Shasta\, an active volcano believed by the early Klamath people to be inhabited by the spirit chief Skell. The area continues to entice spiritual seekers of every disposition and we will camp among them. \nWe’ll need our rest\, because on July 10th we continue north to Crater Lake where we will spend the day along the rim of the deepest freshwater lake in America. The brave among us may decide to slip into the water for a quick swim. Anglers- feel free to wet your lines. No license required! \nWe’ll spend the night along Diamond Lake in Oregon’s Umpqua National Forest before heading over to Silver Falls State Park on July 11th for a day spent hiking the Trail of Ten Falls before setting up camp. \nJuly 12th is our city day (and perhaps our most ambitious) with a few hours earmarked for trips into Portland and Seattle to stock up on supplies and sample their legendary coffees before squeezing in a side trip to Mount Saint Helens\, perhaps the most active and destructive of all the volcanoes on our trip. \nIt will be late by the time we make it to our group campsite along the banks of Goodell Creek in Washington’s North Cascades National Park. The volcanoes here are dormant\, but we will be a witness to their geological legacy as we take in the scope and the magnitude of what has been described as the American Alps. \nThe morning of July 13th will see us\, God willing\, exploring the North Cascades for a full day before settling in for our last night together where we hope to honor the adventure through one last shared meal and a closing reflection before parting ways the morning of July 14th. \nIncluded: \n\nOvernight accommodations and meal at Dust and Tribe Camp One (optional)\nOvernight camping in Lassen\, Shasta\, Umpqua National Forest\, Silver Falls State Park\, and the North Cascades\nPoint-by-point itinerary\, packing list\, and personalized assistance with logistics\nCommemorative D&T Kin keepsake to honor our time together\nNew friends and a lifetime of memories!\n\nYou are responsible for your family’s food\, transportation\, clothing\, and gear (limited rentals are available). \nPlease note: \nThis is a one-way itinerary from Placerville to the North Cascades National Park. \nPlease plan your trip home accordingly. \nThe adventure fee is $120/per participant over two years of age. \nYour 50% deposit is refundable up until 11:59 pm on Friday April 28th\, 2023. \nRegistration for this event is closed \nQuestions? Send us a message through our Contact Page \nSigned up? You are an inspiration and a comment from you could be just the bit of encouragement someone else needs to come along!

SUMMARY:D&T Grrrl!/D&T Gents: Bioluminescent Kayak-Camping in Tomales Bay
DESCRIPTION:Men and Women 17+* \nAll creeds welcome \nAdventure Score: 3 \n*This is a parallel program with separate and remote camps for men and women. \nWhile within the physical capabilities of most\, this expedition is highly technical and may require gear expenditures in addition to your registration fee. \nHome of the Coast Miwok people\, Tomales Bay embodies the rugged and chaotic beauty of existence itself. \nThe wind and tides sculpt the surrounding bluffs even as they challenge the adventurer with heave and spray. Twenty feet below\, tectonic plates along either side of the San Andreas Fault slip ever so slowly past one another on their way to eventual cataclysm. \nPaddling along the western shore will put us within view of native eel grass\, otters\, jellyfish\, leopard sharks\, and all manner of sea birds riding the currents of air as they hunt and court. The surrounding grasslands are considered among the most biologically diverse regions on earth. Therein can be found tule elk\, black bear\, weasels\, raccoons\, bats\, and beavers. \nAnd you will sleep among them\, if you choose to sleep. \nBecause on moonless nights\, there is magic in the water. \nWe have timed this adventure to coincide with the new moon of Dhu al-Qa’dah when the sky is darkest. The brave among us are invited back into the inky water to experience the miracle of bioluminescence\, the flashing of organic light from the tiniest of animals as they shimmer in response to our movement. \nStars above and stars below\, you will be as you once were: suspended\, floating in a black womb of wonder and majesty. \nThese marvels are guarded by rigors that must be overcome\, and few will make the effort. Read on to determine if you will be among them. \nIncluded: \n\nPre-trip lodging\, meals\, and transport to/from D&T Camp One (if flying into Sacramento airport 5/18- limited to 4 persons)\nThree days and two nights of camping in Tomales Bay\nPaddles and flotation vests\nTandem kayak and one dry bag for every two participants\nPortable toilet and privacy tent for men (vault toilets will be available for women)\nItinerary\, packing list\, and personalized assistance with logistics\nCarpool coordination (on-site parking limited)\nOne male and one female wilderness first-aid certified guide\nCommemorative D&T keepsakes to honor our time together\nNew friends and a lifetime of memories!\n \nYou are responsible for your food\, water (one gallon/day)\, clothing (including swimwear)\, tent\, sleep kit\, and cooking/mess supplies. \nDue to the space and weight restrictions of your tandem kayak\, you must be able to fit all of your clothing\, food\, and mess kits into a daypack. \nWetsuits are highly recommended\, though not absolutely necessary. A limited number of wetsuits may be available for rent on the day of departure. \nTents\, sleeping bags\, and sleeping pads should be sized for backpacking. Rental options may be available at your local REI. You can also explore home-delivered rentals through Moosejaw and Outdoors Geek. \nLimited rentals are also available through Dust and Tribe. \nExtra dry bags are available for rent at Blue Waters Kayaking. \nSome items like tents and stoves can be shared. As part of our commitment to coordinating a smooth trip\, minimizing unnecessary expenses\, and building group camaraderie\, Dust and Tribe will work to assess group needs and advise accordingly. \nParticipants should feel confident in their ability to paddle for up to two hours. There will be opportunities for rests and breaks. Although flotation vests will be provided\, participants would ideally be able to swim. At a minimum\, participants must not be prone to panicking in the water. \nAs mentioned above\, women will have access to vault toilets. Men will have a more rigorous experience with a longer paddle and no bathroom facilities (portable toilet and privacy tent will be provided). Campfires on the beach are permitted\, provided we are all committed to maximum efficiency in order to allow room on our kayaks for firewood. \nCOVID-19: We are committed to keeping all participants healthy through smaller groups and the implementation of rigorous medical pre-screening. Once gathered\, social distancing and the wearing of masks will neither be enforced nor discouraged. \nBook your spot with a $100 deposit that is fully refundable 30 days prior to our trip (refund deadline Wednesday 4/19/2023). Refunds will not be offered after the aforementioned date except in cases of a documented or suspected COVID infection within 14 days of our event. \nFull-refunds will also be offered in the event of inclement weather severe enough to pose a risk to participants. \nWe’ve got room for 12 men and 14 women. Please book using the appropriate button: \n\n \n\n\n \nDon’t want to hassle with food? We’re happy to put together a 2000 calorie/day vegetarian meal bundle to get you through the weekend. SUMMARY:D&T Grrrl! The Earthblood Gathering
DESCRIPTION:Women 16+ \nAll creeds welcome \nAdventure Score: 2 \nThe new moon of Sha’ban approaches\, and Dust and Tribe is calling out to women everywhere. \nDeep within Death Valley\, in the desert once known to the indigenous people as Tümpisa for the rich deposits of red ochre found there\, an oasis beckons. This is the land of the Pa Niwintsi\, the “water people” and the namesake of the Panamint Springs area where you will set up camp with your sisters for three nights and three days of reverent adventure. \nDiscover waterfalls and breathtaking vistas that change color with the movement of the sun. Witness dark\, bejewelled skies\, the like of which you can scarcely imagine. Explore abandoned settlements and the ruined operations of foolish men who once tried to tame the wilderness. Learn from their folly and recognize in the vast and undulating landscape the majesty and rigor of our Creator. \nYou and your fellow nomads will gather on Friday evening\, binding together in clans of four\, each woman assuming a critical role on behalf of all. Coyote\, Spoon Keeper\, Sage Burner\, and Tale Weaver- clan work is how you will reveal the hidden treasures each of you bring to the desert. For all the awe the landscape offers\, there is nothing so magnificent as the heart of a believer witnessing therein the Hand of God. \nThe Earthblood Gathering is an homage to the people who saw in the abundant red ochre of Tümpisa the very heart of creation. It is an invitation to find God in the wild and to nurture the relationships that will bring us ever closer to the Divine. \nCOVID-19: We are committed to keeping all participants healthy through smaller groups and the implementation of rigorous medical pre-screening. Once gathered\, social distancing and the wearing of masks will neither be enforced nor discouraged. \nTents\, sleep kits (sleeping bag and pad)\, and halal meals provided. \nTransportation is not included. Carpooling is encouraged and Dust and Tribe will assist in coordinating this with registered participants\, insha Allah. \nBook your spot with a $100 non-refundable deposit. \n\n \nQuestions?
\nSurfboard\, wetsuit\, and camping fees included with registration. Those with their own board and wetsuit will receive an $80 discount upon balance fulfillment. \nAll meals provided. \nBring your own camping gear or rent from us. \nCOVID-19: We are committed to keeping all participants healthy through smaller groups and the implementation of rigorous medical pre-screening. Once gathered\, social distancing and the wearing of masks will neither be enforced nor discouraged. \nBook your spot with a 50% deposit ($150) that is fully refundable up to 60 days prior to our trip (refund deadline Monday 7/18/2022). Refunds will not be offered after the aforementioned date except in cases of a documented or suspected COVID infection within 14 days of our event. \n\n \nSold out? SUMMARY:D&T Grind: The Five Lakes Loop
DESCRIPTION:Men and women 16+ \nAll creeds welcome \nAdventure Score: 3 \nJoin us for our most ambitious backpacking trip ever as we spend five nights and six days in the subalpine glacial valley of Mineral King. \nLocated in the southern portion of Sequoia National Park\, Mineral King was the historic summer home of the Yokut people who came to hunt and forage far from the simmering heat of the Central Valley. We will be traversing the storied Five Lakes Loop over the course of an adventure that is sure to test us on every level. \nThis is D&T Grind. And if you’re not up for a challenge\, please sit this one out. \nWe believe that anybody can do anything with God’s permission and a commitment to do the work. At 30 miles and 10\,000 feet of elevation gain\, before asking us if this trip is right for you\, ask yourself if you’re willing to train hard\, take direction\, and support your fellow travelers in doing the same. \nIf so\, welcome to Mineral King! \nThis subalpine trek will require one day of acclimatizing at our basecamp off Mineral King Road. The next morning we make our way to the Timber Gap Trailhead to begin our ascent with views of the Great Western Divide\, the Sierra range that separates Kings Canyon from Sequoia National Park. At points we will climb to a lung-busting 11\,500 feet and you can expect predawn starts\, exposed switchbacks\, and numerous questions to yourself about why you signed up for misery. \nBut then you’ll see the pristine\, trout-laden lakes\, the creeks burbling across the trails\, the stands of lodgepole pine and scattered fir forest\, and the tremendous walls of granite that lean in like titanic sentinels protecting the valley from the unworthy. You will recognize that to be in this place in the company of believing folk is to be truly favored indeed. The pain will subside\, but the memories you make here will flutter back to you unbeckoned in times of mirth and trial\, reminding you of who you were in Mineral King. \nAnd if you could be that once\, with God’s permission you can be that always. \nCOVID-19: We are committed to keeping all participants healthy through smaller groups and the implementation of rigorous medical pre-screening. Once gathered\, social distancing and the wearing of masks will neither be enforced nor discouraged. \nParticipants should be confident in their ability to carry 40 pounds while hiking up to 10 miles/day. \nOnly 3 spots remaining! \nBook your spot with a 50% deposit ($200) that is fully refundable up to 60 days prior to our trip (refund deadline Monday 7/4/2022). Refunds will not be offered after the aforementioned date except in cases of a documented or suspected COVID infection within 14 days of our event. \n\n \n  \nNeed gear? See our Rentals page for options. \nDon’t want to hassle with food? We’re happy to put together a 2000 calorie/day vegetarian meal bundle to get you through the weekend. The bundle includes pasta and quinoa-based entrees\, oatmeal\, granola\, and lots of chocolate\, nut-butters\, and fat-rich coconut strips to fuel your adventure. Note: please add two (2) orders to your cart to cover all six days on the trail! \n\n \n  \nQuestions? Send us a message through our Contact Page

SUMMARY:D&T Rites: Firesong w/Islah LA
DESCRIPTION:For men ages 13+. \nAll creeds welcome. \nAdventure Score: 2 \n“And has the story of Moses come to you? When he saw a fire and said to his family: Stay here- indeed\, I have perceived a fire. Perhaps I can bring you a torch or find at the fire some guidance.” (Q20:9-10) \nThis summer we are bringing the young men and male elders of Islah LA to Lake Tahoe’s Desolation Wilderness for a backpacking trip where we will search for guidance and meaning in the signs that God has placed therein. \nWhen Moses sought the fire\, may God’s peace be upon him\, he was tasked with a mission to speak truth to power. He would have to face the despotic Pharaoh\, but not alone. God gave him miracles\, a shape-shifting staff\, a blazing hand\, but nothing more heartening to Moses than the blessing of his brother’s company. \nThere are oppressive forces at work within each of us and there are innumerable enemies without\, all conspiring to divert us from the Straight Path\, the path wherein we come to recognize the fullness of our responsibility before God. We are leaving our families behind for the mysteries and tribulation of the wilderness to seek the Fire’s Song\, the inspiration that Moses found. And together\, we will act on that inspiration in fraternity and without fear. \nBut we need your help. \nWe have 10 men signed up and ready to go. There are fathers and sons\, men who were formerly incarcerated\, and community leaders all banding together for a mystical expedition. But this is a community on the edge\, where the demands of inner-city life siphon energy and resources to such an extent that it’s hard to prioritize a backpacking trip. \nDust and Tribe and Islah LA are committed\, with God’s permission\, to alleviating any financial or logistical barriers to participation. We are willing to absorb any and all costs associated with this adventure\, but that is not a sustainable approach if we are to continue partnering with the communities that need the Fire’s Song the most. \nIn addition to the inspiration and fraternity that will come of spending time together in conifer forests surrounded by walls of granite\, participants will learn essential wilderness skills putting them in touch with the legacy of our ancestors: basic navigating using the sun and stars\, identifying wild edibles\, clearing a campsite\, purifying water\, and the disposing of waste in a backcountry environment. All gear and food will be provided in addition to the support of two trip leaders\, both of whom are certified Wilderness First Responders. \nWe are asking for those with the means to consider acting as patrons of the wild\, Dust and Tribe sponsors willing to offset trip expenses. \nGod’s reward for a good intention is guaranteed by Him. In addition\, your $300 patronage will deem you a D&T Clan Outlander with your own Clan Card\, early access to events\, massive discounts\, and access to our gear library. \nAlready an Outlander? We’ll send you your choice of either a D&T copper-insulated water bottle or our quick-dry short-sleeve tech shirt. \n7/25/2022 Update: Through God’s Grace and the overwhelming generosity of his believing folk\, you have funded 9/10 participants so far\, masha Allah! \nClick here to change a man’s life: \n\n \n  \nCOVID-19: We are committed to keeping all participants healthy through smaller groups and the implementation of rigorous medical pre-screening. Once gathered\, social distancing and the wearing of masks will neither be enforced nor discouraged. \nQuestions? Send us a message through our Contact Page

SUMMARY:D&T Rites: Moonfast (father/son)
DESCRIPTION:For fathers and their sons aged 13+ \nAdventure Score: 2 \nJoin us for this transitional journey as we honor our sons passing into manhood. \nTogether we will embark on an adventure that will bring together the sacred Islamic practice of fasting during the “White Days” with elements from our blessed Prophet’s Night Journey\, may God bless him and give him peace. \nDay 1: The day just before the full moon\, this is our mirth day\, and the last day of boyhood. We will mark this through the Abrahamic rite of slaughter. Then\, while fasting\, fathers and sons will make the rigorous hike to our campsite\, learning some basic wilderness skills along the way. Once in camp\, we will wait for sunset before breaking our fast and circling up for a thorough grounding in the basics of religious practice and an exploration of manhood as it relates to our experience as Muslims living in the West. \nDay 2: The day of the full moon\, this is the day of transition. Resuming our fast\, we make our way to our final campsite just a few miles short of the summit. Our sons will practice the Zacharian rite of silence\, allowing time for the fathers to pass on what they will freely and without interruption. Upon making camp\, we will await sunset at which point we break our fast and our sons may speak. This is their time to respond to all they’ve heard and to seek clarity in preparation for their Night Journey. \nUpon the rising of the full moon\, our sons will summit the mountain. Fathers will remain at camp. \nDay 3: The day after the full moon\, this is the day of receiving. We will resume our fast and our sons\, having returned from the mountaintop as men\, will lead us down and off the mountain. From there we will caravan to a sunset reception where they will be honored and each of them will relate their story of transition. \nThere are only 5 father/son spots available. This event will cancel if fewer than four young men registered by 5/16/2022. \nSingle mothers: please reach out through our Contact Page prior to registration. \nCOVID-19: We are committed to keeping all participants healthy through smaller groups and the implementation of rigorous medical pre-screening. Once gathered\, social distancing and the wearing of masks will neither be enforced nor discouraged. \nBook a spot for father and son with a 50% deposit ($200) that is fully refundable up to 60 days prior to our trip (refund deadline Thursday 4/14/2022). Refunds will not be offered after the aforementioned date except in cases of a documented or suspected COVID infection within 14 days of our event. \n\n \n\n \n  \nNeed gear? See our Rentals page for options. \nDon’t want to hassle with food? We’re happy to put together a 2000 calorie/day vegetarian meal bundle to get you through the weekend. The bundle includes pasta and quinoa-based entrees\, oatmeal\, granola\, and lots of chocolate\, nut-butters\, and fat-rich coconut strips to fuel your adventure! \n\n \n  \nQuestions? SUMMARY:D&T Treks: Behind the Clouds
DESCRIPTION:Men and women 16+ \nAll creeds welcome \nAdventure Score: 1 \nJoin us as we trek through Cuyamaca Rancho State Park\, spending three days navigating a 16-mile loop hike through iconic California grassland\, chaparral\, and picturesque stands of gnarled oak and fragrant pine. \nThis is a great way to build comfort in the backcountry without intimidating daily mileage. \nThe word “Cuyamaca” is said to be a corruption of the Kumeyaay word for “behind the clouds\,” a reference to the precipitation that falls in the foothills of Southern California’s Peninsular Ranges. Our journey will take us up and down rolling hills and out across expansive meadows where we might spot mule deer\, coyotes\, bobcats\, and even wild turkeys. \nWe’ll warm up on Day One with a four-mile hike to our trail camp. Once settled\, we’ll spend some time exploring the area and getting to know one another. \nAnd we’ll need to get to bed early because we’re logging ten miles on Day Two\, a nice introduction to the D&T Grind experience\, should you aspire to such things. But it won’t all be drudgery. We’ll cross a creek and a river\, and if we’ve got the energy to spare\, we might even take a side trip to cool off in some little waterfalls and rock-rimmed pools. \nOnce at camp\, we’ll enjoy our well-deserved dinner before turning in\, happy in the knowledge that Day Three is only a two-mile pack-out to our cars\, insha Allah. \nYou are responsible for your food\, gear\, and transportation. We will provide the logistics\, expertise\, and mentorship. \nParticipants should be confident in their ability to carry a 30-40 pound pack a maximum of 10 miles. \nNot sure you can? Sign up for our Intro to Backpacking overnight clinic here. \nCOVID-19: We are committed to keeping all participants healthy through smaller groups and the implementation of rigorous medical pre-screening. Once gathered\, social distancing and the wearing of masks will neither be enforced nor discouraged. \nThere are 12 spots available. This event will cancel if fewer than six registered participants by 5/14/2022. \nBook your spot with a 50% deposit ($150) that is fully refundable up to 60 days prior to our trip (refund deadline Tuesday 3/22/2021). SUMMARY:D&T Moon: The Eclipse Prayer w/ Sh. Suhail Mulla
DESCRIPTION:Men and women of all ages \nJoin the Dust and Tribe Moonthusiasts as we gather with Shaykh Suhail Mulla at the Islamic Society of West Valley to revive the sunnah of the eclipse prayer\, salat al-khusuf. \nThe Prophet said\, may the peace and blessings of God be upon him: \n“The sun and the moon do not eclipse because of someone’s death or life but they are two signs amongst the signs of God\, so pray whenever you see them.” \nMuslims strike the balance\, pushing back against a secularized hyperrational culture that denies sacred mystery while also avoiding baseless superstition. All of this is contained in the eclipse prayer as we celebrate the supreme beauty of calculable celestial rhythms and honor the Merciful Creator in the process. \nInterested participants are welcome to join us for dinner at nearby Lemongrass Thai-Halal at 5 pm before heading over to the Islamic Society of West Valley for the sunset prayer and some brief reflections before commencing with the eclipse prayer\, God willing. \nIf inclined and able\, feel free to bring your telescope or binoculars for observation of the eclipse. \nThis is a free event open to all ages. Expenses associated with dinner will not be covered. \nAlthough registration is not required\, clicking the box below helps us with our planning.

SUMMARY:D&T(een): Wilderness Weekend with Islah LA
DESCRIPTION:For enrollees and alumni of Islah Academy 13+ only \nAdventure Score: 1 \nThis event is sponsored in part by Street Tawa BBQ Halal Brisket Sandwiches \n“As you walk look around\, assess where you are\, reflect on where you have been\, and dream of where you are going. Every moment of the present contains the seeds of opportunity for change. Your life is an adventure. Live it fully.” \nJohn Francis\, the Planetwalker \nDust and Tribe is proud to partner with Islah LA for a weekend of wilderness exploration designed to revive\, renew\, and restore our faith in God through engagement with His creation. \nInspired and informed by Islah Academy’s insistence on experiential learning\, Dust and Tribe has curated an adventure that will take our youth from the inner city of South Los Angeles to the coast of Santa Barbara and into the foothills of the Los Padres National Forest for three days and two nights of camping along the Santa Ynez River. \nDay 1 \nWe gather at Islah LA on Friday\, March 18th where our shuttle and volunteers will transport participants to the tide pools of Devereux Beach in Isla Vista. We’ll explore and discuss life in the intertidal zone while reviewing the natural history of the local area before moving into the water for a “fish-eye” view from our paddleboards. \nAll equipment including wetsuits and flotation vests will be provided along with volunteer mentors to make sure everyone stays safe while having fun. And when it’s time to dry off\, we’ll enjoy a picnic lunch on the beach before boarding our shuttle and heading into the foothills of the Los Padres National Forest where we will make camp and have dinner along the banks of the Santa Ynez River. \nDay 2 \nAfter a hot breakfast\, we’ll set out into the surrounding countryside to explore the local environs. We’ll learn about native edible and medicinal plants and their uses by the indigenous Chumash. We’ll have lunch in the field before returning to camp. \nThe bold among us may want to take a nap before dinner and the sunset prayer because tonight we hike the forest under a full moon. This will be a night to remember as we pick our way through the silvery light and wonder- are we predator or prey? \nDay 3 \nWe wake to another hot breakfast and prepare to end our time together with a gratitude exercise to cement the learning that God Most High has allowed while invoking blessings upon all who worked to bring this vision to light. Once complete\, we board our shuttle for the trip back to Islah LA. \nThis is a coed event that will be chaperoned by representatives from the Islah LA community along with the facilitators of Dust and Tribe and Muslim students from nearby UCSB. \nFees include all halal meals\, all camping equipment\, transportation to and from Islah LA\, two WFR certified wilderness guides\, paddleboards\, wetsuits\, personal flotation devices\, lifeguards\, and a cadre of volunteers and chaperones committed to hosting our young guests in accordance with the highest standards of Islamic etiquette. \nThere are only 5 female and 5 male spots available. \n\n \n\n \nQuestions? SUMMARY:D&T Grind: Primal California
DESCRIPTION:Men and women 16+ \nAll creeds welcome. \nAdventure Score: 2 \nThere is no more iconic landscape than the rolling\, verdant grasslands of California. Long before gold was discovered\, the honeyed hues of an oak-studded hillside were enough to cement California’s aurulent reputation; for it is the Golden State. \nExcept in the winter. In this time\, much of California is a misty emerald. \nAnd we invite you to savor this damp and cold jewel for three days and two nights in California’s Henry W. Coe State Park. \nD&T Grind is our winter coed backpacking adventure where we ask men and women to face adversity together. Cold temperatures\, wet weather\, swollen creeks\, impassable routes\, long miles\, and steep climbs are only a few of the challenges we will embrace as we rediscover what it means to be sisters and brothers in faith. \nThis is a far cry from the lecture halls and temple sermons. \nThis is lived experience where all that you are will become apparent to yourself and others\, coaxed into the dim winter light by the rigors of novelty and fatigue. \nGrind will humiliate the arrogant and reward the selfless. Against the backdrop of wet earth and grey sky\, our insignificance is an undeniable mandate for the humble to assist one another and press on. Even so\, the haughtiness within us may rue the day\, grumbling for a return to the small\, safe spaces that affirm our sense of grandeur and control. \nGrind is a lesson. Grind is a teacher. Grind is a gift. \nYou are responsible for your food\, gear\, and transportation. We will provide the logistics\, expertise\, and mentorship. \nAnd together\, God willing\, we’ll get through this. \nCOVID-19: We are committed to keeping all participants healthy through smaller groups and the implementation of rigorous medical pre-screening. Once gathered\, social distancing and the wearing of masks will neither be enforced nor discouraged. \nParticipants should be confident in their ability to carry 40 pounds while hiking 10 miles/day. \nNot sure you can? \nBook your spot with a 50% deposit ($150) that is fully refundable up to 60 days prior to our trip (refund deadline Tuesday 11/16/2021). SUMMARY:D&T X: Dove Hunt for Beginners
DESCRIPTION:For men 18+ \nAll creeds welcome. \nAdventure Score: 2 \nRecognized by men of our way is the obligation to provide. It is a legacy we share with the indigenous men of California\, many of whom would present their initial kills to their tribe as a declaration of their maturity and eligibility for marriage. \nModernity has changed the manner in which we provide. As we settle into our roles as wage-earners\, we adapt to our new environment and lose essential faculties in the process. Our vision is weaker. We no longer understand what we are smelling. Our ears have lost their sensitivity and we move through the land with loud\, heavy feet. \nIn addition\, we have become completely disconnected from the sources of our food\, trading this crucial awareness for convenience and subsidizing the horrors of unconscionable agribusiness with every bite of store-bought meat. \nWe’re inviting a handful of men to reconsider all of this. \nFor the first time ever\, Dust and Tribe is offering a guided hunt. We will establish a group camp near Bakersfield\, California. You are responsible to provide your own gun\, camping gear\, and food. We’ll show you where the birds are and how to harvest\, dress\, and prepare them. \nYour first step is to take your online California Hunter Safety Course. \nOnce completed\, you will need to pay for your Resident Hunting License and Upland Game Bird Validations here. \nOnce you have your hunting license\, you must purchase or otherwise acquire your own shotgun and ammunition. We will link participants with our hunting mentor to assist you in making your selection. \nOn Friday\, November 12th\, we will establish our group camp outside of Bakersfield\, California. We will spend this day getting to know one another and our firearms\, taking the time to learn how to clean\, care for\, and fire our weapons. \nSaturday November 13th is our hunting day. We will fan out after the predawn prayer to begin our search for dove. With God’s permission\, we will break midday to learn how to gut and clean our catch as we regroup and begin our preparations for a second evening hunt\, possibly for quail. \nWe’ll continue hunting through Sunday and break camp on Monday\, November 15th\, circling up to reflect and share gratitude for our time together\, the skills acquired\, and the abundance of God’s provision. \nRegistered participants will receive a gear and supply list. \nCOVID-19: We are committed to keeping all participants healthy through smaller groups and the implementation of rigorous medical pre-screening\, including a negative COVID test within the 72 hours prior to our initial gathering day. Once gathered\, social distancing and the wearing of masks will neither be enforced nor discouraged. \n  \nThere are only five spots available. \nBook your hunt with a 50% deposit ($150) that is fully refundable up to 60 days prior to our hunt (refund deadline Tuesday 9/14/2021). \n\n \n  \nNot ready to hunt? SUMMARY:D&T Lite: Intro to Backpacking 1.0
DESCRIPTION:Men and women 16+ \nAll creeds welcome. \nWe’re very excited to offer a series of introductory backpacking experiences for those of you curious about what it takes to prepare for the backcountry. \nWe’ll provide the gear\, food\, and expertise. You will need to provide carrying capacity for a minimum of one gallon of water (bladder\, bottles\, or collapsible jug). \nNo previous backpacking experience or wilderness knowledge is required. We won’t be traveling far: only three miles in and three miles out. \nThat doesn’t mean it will be easy. \nWe’ve got a bit of a climb to get to camp\, but it will be worth it. And we’ll likely forget the pain as we prepare our dinner and watch the sunset from bluffs overlooking Crystal Cove State Park. \nOver the course of the weekend we’ll talk about gear selection\, how to pack for short and long trips\, and general wilderness preparedness. You’ll learn how to set up a tent\, filter water\, and use a camp stove. \nBut that’s not the best part. \nThe best part is the conversations we’ll have\, the primal thrill of sleeping under the stars and\, for those who practice\, the immense reward for prayers offered in the wilderness. \n  \nThere are only seven spots available. \nBook your spot with a 50% deposit ($100) that is fully refundable up to 28 days prior to our trip (refund deadline Tuesday 9/11/2021). Refunds will not be offered after the aforementioned date except in cases of a documented or suspected COVID infection within 14 days of our event. \n\n \n  \nNot ready to camp?
