But we’ve spent a lifetime on the sand. \nWe’re going to change that with the help of Kooks and Kahunas\, our local Muslim surf club. These aren’t just guys chasing waves. They are a committed group of spiritual seekers who understand that\, for all of the ocean’s power and immensity\, each wave that rolls in might hold the ride of a lifetime for exactly one person. \nThe universe is a big place. But you’re in it and there’s a reason. And sometimes you just need to suit up and float in the darkness for awhile before any of it makes sense. \nThere’s a whole lot more to surfing than surfing\, bro. \nFriday is our gathering day. We’ll get our beach camp sorted and learn about one another over dinner. After a night’s rest\, we’ll have breakfast\, handle our predawn prayers\, and hit the beach for some safety instruction and basic preliminaries including board selection\, waxing\, and where to attach that pesky leg leash (hint: your leg). Then it’s into the water where we learn to find the “sweet spot” for our paddle-out and some practice belly-boarding in. You’ll be paired with a mentor who\, although not a formal instructor\, is passionate about surfing and invested in sharing that love with you. \nFrom there it’s back to the sand where we’ll practice our pop-ups until we’re feeling confident enough to try standing in the water. \nWe’ll have two nights and two days on the beach. After the first morning\, the rest of our time together is about practice and the camaraderie that comes out of learning together. \nBest case scenario\, we show up kooks and come home kahunas. \nBut don’t count on it. Better to focus on the good times we’ll have. With God’s help and permission\, we can pretty well guarantee that. \nSurfboard\, wetsuit\, and camping fees included with registration. We won’t be traveling far: only three miles in and three miles out. \nThat doesn’t mean it will be easy. \nWe’ve got a bit of a climb to get to camp\, but it will be worth it. And we’ll likely forget the pain as we prepare our dinner and watch the sunset from bluffs overlooking Crystal Cove State Park. \nOver the course of the weekend we’ll talk about gear selection\, how to pack for short and long trips\, and general wilderness preparedness. We will be traversing the storied Five Lakes Loop over the course of an adventure that is sure to test us on every level. \nThis is D&T Grind. And if you’re not up for a challenge\, please sit this one out. \nWe believe that anybody can do anything with God’s permission and a commitment to do the work. At 30 miles and 10\,000 feet of elevation gain\, before asking us if this trip is right for you\, ask yourself if you’re willing to train hard\, take direction\, and support your fellow travelers in doing the same. \nIf so\, welcome to Mineral King! \nThis subalpine trek will require one day of acclimatizing at our basecamp off Mineral King Road. The next morning we make our way to the Timber Gap Trailhead to begin our ascent with views of the Great Western Divide\, the Sierra range that separates Kings Canyon from Sequoia National Park. At points we will climb to a lung-busting 11\,500 feet and you can expect predawn starts\, exposed switchbacks\, and numerous questions to yourself about why you signed up for misery. \nBut then you’ll see the pristine\, trout-laden lakes\, the creeks burbling across the trails\, the stands of lodgepole pine and scattered fir forest\, and the tremendous walls of granite that lean in like titanic sentinels protecting the valley from the unworthy. You will recognize that to be in this place in the company of believing folk is to be truly favored indeed. Perhaps I can bring you a torch or find at the fire some guidance.” (Q20:9-10) \nThis summer we are bringing the young men and male elders of Islah LA to Lake Tahoe’s Desolation Wilderness for a backpacking trip where we will search for guidance and meaning in the signs that God has placed therein. \nWhen Moses sought the fire\, may God’s peace be upon him\, he was tasked with a mission to speak truth to power. He would have to face the despotic Pharaoh\, but not alone. God gave him miracles\, a shape-shifting staff\, a blazing hand\, but nothing more heartening to Moses than the blessing of his brother’s company. \nThere are oppressive forces at work within each of us and there are innumerable enemies without\, all conspiring to divert us from the Straight Path\, the path wherein we come to recognize the fullness of our responsibility before God. We are leaving our families behind for the mysteries and tribulation of the wilderness to seek the Fire’s Song\, the inspiration that Moses found. And together\, we will act on that inspiration in fraternity and without fear. \nBut we need your help. \nWe have 10 men signed up and ready to go. There are fathers and sons\, men who were formerly incarcerated\, and community leaders all banding together for a mystical expedition. But this is a community on the edge\, where the demands of inner-city life siphon energy and resources to such an extent that it’s hard to prioritize a backpacking trip. \nDust and Tribe and Islah LA are committed\, with God’s permission\, to alleviating any financial or logistical barriers to participation. We’ve got a better idea! \nDust and Tribe\, in collaboration with OARS\, brings you two days and 21 miles of whitewater fun along the South Fork of the American River! Steeped in Gold Rush history\, the American River is lined with oak and pine forests that tumble through the Sierra Nevada foothills\, creating valleys and gorges that mirror the flow and rolling rapids of this classic California river. \nThis is our annual family adventure\, open to ages 8 and up. \nWe only do one a year\, so don’t miss it! \nOn Saturday\, July 9th\, we’ll gather for a night under the stars at the OARS American River Outpost\, about an hour outside of Sacramento\, where we’ll enjoy: \n\n\n\nOur own group campsite\nBeach access for swimming in the river\nFull men’s and women’s bathrooms with hot showers and flush toilets\nGames\, including horseshoes\, volleyball\, and a life-size chess board\nEasy walking distance to local cafes\nNature trails\nFree WiFi\n\n\n\nOn the morning of Sunday\, July 10th we’ll rise early for the Eid prayer before putting into the river for five hours of whitewater fun\, breaking for lunch before returning to camp. \nOn the morning of Monday\, July 11th we’ll take a shuttle to our next put-in for another three hours of roiling\, wet madness before ending the day back at the OARS Outpost to break camp and head home with a heart full of memories to last a lifetime\, insha Allah. \nWe’ve negotiated a private launch just for our group with scheduled prayer breaks. DESCRIPTION:For fathers and their sons aged 13+ \nAdventure Score: 2 \nJoin us for this transitional journey as we honor our sons passing into manhood. \nTogether we will embark on an adventure that will bring together the sacred Islamic practice of fasting during the “White Days” with elements from our blessed Prophet’s Night Journey\, may God bless him and give him peace. \nDay 1: The day just before the full moon\, this is our mirth day\, and the last day of boyhood. We will mark this through the Abrahamic rite of slaughter. Then\, while fasting\, fathers and sons will make the rigorous hike to our campsite\, learning some basic wilderness skills along the way. Once in camp\, we will wait for sunset before breaking our fast and circling up for a thorough grounding in the basics of religious practice and an exploration of manhood as it relates to our experience as Muslims living in the West. \nDay 2: The day of the full moon\, this is the day of transition. Resuming our fast\, we make our way to our final campsite just a few miles short of the summit. Our sons will practice the Zacharian rite of silence\, allowing time for the fathers to pass on what they will freely and without interruption. Upon making camp\, we will await sunset at which point we break our fast and our sons may speak. This is their time to respond to all they’ve heard and to seek clarity in preparation for their Night Journey. \nUpon the rising of the full moon\, our sons will summit the mountain. Fathers will remain at camp. \nDay 3: The day after the full moon\, this is the day of receiving. We will resume our fast and our sons\, having returned from the mountaintop as men\, will lead us down and off the mountain. From there we will caravan to a sunset reception where they will be honored and each of them will relate their story of transition. \nThere are only 5 father/son spots available. DESCRIPTION:Men and women 16+ \nAll creeds welcome \nAdventure Score: 1 \nJoin us as we trek through Cuyamaca Rancho State Park\, spending three days navigating a 16-mile loop hike through iconic California grassland\, chaparral\, and picturesque stands of gnarled oak and fragrant pine. \nThis is a great way to build comfort in the backcountry without intimidating daily mileage. \nThe word “Cuyamaca” is said to be a corruption of the Kumeyaay word for “behind the clouds\,” a reference to the precipitation that falls in the foothills of Southern California’s Peninsular Ranges. Our journey will take us up and down rolling hills and out across expansive meadows where we might spot mule deer\, coyotes\, bobcats\, and even wild turkeys. \nWe’ll warm up on Day One with a four-mile hike to our trail camp. Once settled\, we’ll spend some time exploring the area and getting to know one another. \nAnd we’ll need to get to bed early because we’re logging ten miles on Day Two\, a nice introduction to the D&T Grind experience\, should you aspire to such things. But it won’t all be drudgery. We’ll cross a creek and a river\, and if we’ve got the energy to spare\, we might even take a side trip to cool off in some little waterfalls and rock-rimmed pools. \nOnce at camp\, we’ll enjoy our well-deserved dinner before turning in\, happy in the knowledge that Day Three is only a two-mile pack-out to our cars\, insha Allah. \nYou are responsible for your food\, gear\, and transportation. DESCRIPTION:Men and women of all ages \nJoin the Dust and Tribe Moonthusiasts as we gather with Shaykh Suhail Mulla at the Islamic Society of West Valley to revive the sunnah of the eclipse prayer\, salat al-khusuf. \nThe Prophet said\, may the peace and blessings of God be upon him: \n“The sun and the moon do not eclipse because of someone’s death or life but they are two signs amongst the signs of God\, so pray whenever you see them.” \nMuslims strike the balance\, pushing back against a secularized hyperrational culture that denies sacred mystery while also avoiding baseless superstition. All of this is contained in the eclipse prayer as we celebrate the supreme beauty of calculable celestial rhythms and honor the Merciful Creator in the process. \nInterested participants are welcome to join us for dinner at nearby Lemongrass Thai-Halal at 5 pm before heading over to the Islamic Society of West Valley for the sunset prayer and some brief reflections before commencing with the eclipse prayer\, God willing. \nIf inclined and able\, feel free to bring your telescope or binoculars for observation of the eclipse. \nThis is a free event open to all ages. DESCRIPTION:Men and women 16+ \nAll creeds welcome. \nJoin us as we head into the desert for one night to review and refine our wilderness backpacking skills. \nHiking into the backcountry of Joshua Tree National Park\, we’ll have a chance to learn about off-trail navigation and Leave No Trace (LNT) principles as we manage two days and one night without access to any water sources or toilet facilities. \nWe’ll learn how to select a backcountry campsite\, how to manage getting lost\, how to use a map and compass\, basic wilderness first aid\, and tips to deal with damaged gear and inclement weather. \nNo previous backpacking experience is necessary. We’ll provide the gear\, food\, and expertise. Younger kids can enjoy the playground and feel free to bring kites\, frisbees\, soccer nets\, or whatever else you need for a good time. \nAnd we’ve got prizes! \nA copy of Ramadan Moon by Na’ima B. Robert goes to the first child to sight the crescent. If impossible\, the youngest child get it. \nA copy of Caesarean Moon Births by Hamza Yusuf goes to the first adult to sight the crescent. If impossible\, eldest gets it. \nWe will only be a few minutes away from the Institute of Knowledge\, the perfect place to pray the nightfall prayer at the conclusion of our quest\, insha Allah. \nLight snacks will be provided. Every moment of the present contains the seeds of opportunity for change. Your life is an adventure. Live it fully.” \nJohn Francis\, the Planetwalker \nDust and Tribe is proud to partner with Islah LA for a weekend of wilderness exploration designed to revive\, renew\, and restore our faith in God through engagement with His creation. \nInspired and informed by Islah Academy’s insistence on experiential learning\, Dust and Tribe has curated an adventure that will take our youth from the inner city of South Los Angeles to the coast of Santa Barbara and into the foothills of the Los Padres National Forest for three days and two nights of camping along the Santa Ynez River. \nDay 1 \nWe gather at Islah LA on Friday\, March 18th where our shuttle and volunteers will transport participants to the tide pools of Devereux Beach in Isla Vista. We’ll explore and discuss life in the intertidal zone while reviewing the natural history of the local area before moving into the water for a “fish-eye” view from our paddleboards. \nAll equipment including wetsuits and flotation vests will be provided along with volunteer mentors to make sure everyone stays safe while having fun. And when it’s time to dry off\, we’ll enjoy a picnic lunch on the beach before boarding our shuttle and heading into the foothills of the Los Padres National Forest where we will make camp and have dinner along the banks of the Santa Ynez River. \nDay 2 \nAfter a hot breakfast\, we’ll set out into the surrounding countryside to explore the local environs. We’ll learn about native edible and medicinal plants and their uses by the indigenous Chumash. We’ll have lunch in the field before returning to camp. \nThe bold among us may want to take a nap before dinner and the sunset prayer because tonight we hike the forest under a full moon. This will be a night to remember as we pick our way through the silvery light and wonder- are we predator or prey? \nDay 3 \nWe wake to another hot breakfast and prepare to end our time together with a gratitude exercise to cement the learning that God Most High has allowed while invoking blessings upon all who worked to bring this vision to light. Once complete\, we board our shuttle for the trip back to Islah LA. \nThis is a coed event that will be chaperoned by representatives from the Islah LA community along with the facilitators of Dust and Tribe and Muslim students from nearby UCSB. \nFees include all halal meals\, all camping equipment\, transportation to and from Islah LA\, two WFR certified wilderness guides\, paddleboards\, wetsuits\, personal flotation devices\, lifeguards\, and a cadre of volunteers and chaperones committed to hosting our young guests in accordance with the highest standards of Islamic etiquette. \nThere are only 5 female and 5 male spots available. \n\n \n\n \nQuestions? DESCRIPTION:Women 16+ \nAll creeds welcome. \nAdventure Score: 1 \nOur signature women’s trip is back: two nights and three days on stunning Santa Cruz Island off the coast of Ventura. \nEmbark on a three-hour channel crossing to the crown jewel of the Channel Islands\, the place the indigenous Chumash called Limuw. Whales and dolphins are apt to frolic in your wake\, the descendants\, according to Chumash legend\, of those men and women who fell from the Rainbow Bridge connecting the island to the mainland. \nIt is a place of origins. For the Chumash\, this was the beginning of creation\, their people arising from the seeds of the Magic Plant. For you\, it is the beginning of discovery\, the grounding of self within creation\, and the consolidation of communal bonds in the flourish of sisterhood. \nYou will hike in the mile or so from your landing at the beach to your campsite where you will pitch your tents and fall in love with the milky oats that grow waist high and the morning glories that twist around your ankles\, with the foxes that slink and steal\, and with the eagles that soar and sail. Miles of trails and secluded rocky coves beckon you to explore and play. \nOur lead facilitator is wilderness first-aid certified and will build an itinerary around your interests and aptitudes that will including hiking\, water play\, native plant identification\, and stargazing- all contextualized within the sacred teachings of our Islamic framework. \nAll skill and fitness levels are welcome. No previous camping experience required- we will walk with you through the entire process. \nThere are only 13 spots available. Long before gold was discovered\, the honeyed hues of an oak-studded hillside were enough to cement California’s aurulent reputation; for it is the Golden State. \nExcept in the winter. In this time\, much of California is a misty emerald. \nAnd we invite you to savor this damp and cold jewel for three days and two nights in California’s Henry W. Coe State Park. \nD&T Grind is our winter coed backpacking adventure where we ask men and women to face adversity together. Cold temperatures\, wet weather\, swollen creeks\, impassable routes\, long miles\, and steep climbs are only a few of the challenges we will embrace as we rediscover what it means to be sisters and brothers in faith. \nThis is a far cry from the lecture halls and temple sermons. \nThis is lived experience where all that you are will become apparent to yourself and others\, coaxed into the dim winter light by the rigors of novelty and fatigue. \nGrind will humiliate the arrogant and reward the selfless. Against the backdrop of wet earth and grey sky\, our insignificance is an undeniable mandate for the humble to assist one another and press on. We will establish a group camp near Bakersfield\, California. You are responsible to provide your own gun\, camping gear\, and food. We’ll show you where the birds are and how to harvest\, dress\, and prepare them. \nYour first step is to take your online California Hunter Safety Course. \nOnce completed\, you will need to pay for your Resident Hunting License and Upland Game Bird Validations here. \nOnce you have your hunting license\, you must purchase or otherwise acquire your own shotgun and ammunition. We will link participants with our hunting mentor to assist you in making your selection. \nOn Friday\, November 12th\, we will establish our group camp outside of Bakersfield\, California. We will spend this day getting to know one another and our firearms\, taking the time to learn how to clean\, care for\, and fire our weapons. \nSaturday November 13th is our hunting day. We will fan out after the predawn prayer to begin our search for dove. Not even in a dream. \nCalled Wima by the indigenous Chumash and located 40 nautical miles off the coast of Ventura\, California\, she is the second largest of the Channel Islands. Whales and sharks plow through the Santa Barbara Channel between you and the mainland. Kelp beds teeming with aquatic life hang suspended in the pristine waters surrounding the island. There are six plants here that are found nowhere else in the world. The pygmy mammoth once roamed here\, but they long ago left it to the foxes\, the skunks\, and the mice. \nAnd now to only a very few of you. Because this adventure is open to fifteen women only\, and you will be taken through it further than you ever imagined. \nIt’s a two and a half hour boat ride from the Ventura Harbor and you’ll have to be there before dawn. The crossing is glorious with great pods of bottle-nose dolphins often frolicking in your wake. \nBut stepping onto the island will have a special kind of gravity. The boat will leave you there. It will be back in three days time to bring you back home\, but you know about the unpredictable spring swells. SUMMARY:D&T Grind: Lust for Gold
DESCRIPTION:It was the farmers that gave it the name: Superstition Mountains. \nThey heard talk from the indigenous Pima who told them about strange sounds\, people who disappeared\, and unexplained deaths. Among some Apache is the belief that within these mountains can be found the very portal to hell\, the exhalations of which send wind and sand raging across the Arizona desert. \nThe farmers figured it was all just superstition. \nBut then there was the Dutchman. \nHis name was Jacob Waltz and he is said to have found the lost gold mines of the Peralta family\, most of whom where butchered by an Apache party at a place they now call the Massacre Grounds. Waltz is said to have mined the Peralta gold and laid it up in hidden mountain caches. \nHe was on his deathbed before he told another soul where that gold lay hidden. Her name was Julia Thomas\, but she never found the gold. No one has. \nBut the multitudes who have tried and failed have left more stories\, and bodies\, on these mountains than any place I know. \nMost say the gold is near Weaver’s Needle. \nAnd that’s where we’re headed. \nThis trip is open to five men and five women ages 16 and up. All creeds are welcome. \nD&T Grind is our winter event where we intentionally put ourselves into challenging situations to force teamwork across genders. \nOut here\, we’re brother and sister. \nThis is a 20-mile loop hike that will have us circumnavigating Weaver’s Needle. Water is sparse in this desert environment and our route\, much of it off-trail\, will be dictated by our hunt for hidden springs. \nAnd maybe the Lost Dutchman’s Gold. \nThis will be a proper adventure. Are you up for it? \nHere are a few things to ask yourself: \n\nDo I feel confident about my ability to hike for 10 miles across varied terrain with a loaded pack in excess of 30 pounds?\nIf not\, will I commit myself to a training regimen that will give me that confidence?\nAm I willing to sacrifice creature comforts\, including warmth\, in order to find hidden reserves of impossible beauty within me and all around me?\nAm I ready to pee outside?\nAm I ready to sacrifice for the welfare of my companions\, sharing food\, water\, and off-loading packs for the ill or otherwise compromised?\n\nD&T Grind is a crucible and the most delicate and wonderful things are forged here. \nWhether or not we find that Dutchman’s gold\, each of us is likely to find something much more precious. \n  \nCOVID-19: We are committed to keeping all participants healthy through smaller groups and the implementation of rigorous medical pre-screening. SUMMARY:D&T Kin: Gypsy Summer '20
DESCRIPTION:We’ve got a classic coastal California road-trip planned for you and your family this summer\, and we’re doing it caravan-style! \nWe’ll spend a week driving and camping along the beaches and redwoods of coastal California\, with a plan to be back in our home communities just in time to celebrate Eid al-Adha\, the Festival of Sacrifice. \nThink about that. Traveling up and down the coast with our brothers and sisters in faith\, honoring our daily prayers all the way- it will be like our own little pilgrimage for those of us not making the Hajj this year. \nAnd what an incredible itinerary! \nWe’ll start out camping along the beach just north of Malibu at Point Mugu before driving inland for two nights in one of our nation’s newest national parks: Pinnacles. \nPinnacles is a geological wonder with volcanic rock formations and caves to explore. I expect the days will be hot\, but we’ve got a swimming pool in camp to keep us cool\, God willing. \nFrom there we make our way back to the coast\, to the seaside villages of Carmel and Monterey where we can grab coffee\, pastries\, and maybe take an early dinner along Cannery Row\, made famous by that greatest of American authors\, John Steinbeck. \nFrom there\, we continue up north to California’s oldest state park\, Big Basin Redwoods in the heart of the Santa Cruz mountains. We’ll spend a night there before moving on to Humboldt Redwoods State Park for a night along the Eel River and more of those glorious\, ancient trees. \nThat’s our turn-around point. Driving south now\, we’ll swing through the artist-colony of Mendocino for some trinkets and refreshment before making camp along the beach at Salt Point. \nIn the morning\, we’ll make a beeline for Point Reyes Station for a required stop at the legendary Cowgirl Creamery for their organic artisan cheeses. \nNext\, we’ve got a long and winding drive through Big Sur\, where we’ll take in some of the most dramatic coastal vistas in all of California before settling in for our final night together at Hearst San Simeon State Park\, famous for its proximity to elephant seal rookeries and a media mogul’s quirky castle. \nIt’s an ambitious itinerary replete with sunrise hikes and campfire conversations\, with open skies\, fresh air\, and excellent company. All but one of our campsites have showers. Most have flush toilets\, and all have running water. \nAnd if you can’t make the whole trip\, feel free to break off or join in whenever and wherever you like! \nBring your family. Bring your friends. DESCRIPTION:for fathers and their sons ages 13 and up \n \nJoin me and Shaykh Suhail Mulla for this transitional journey as we honor our young men. \nTo mark our sons passing into manhood\, we will embark on an adventure that will bring together the sacred Islamic practice of fasting during the “white days” with elements from our blessed Prophet’s Night Journey\, may God bless him and give him peace. \nDay 1: The day just before the full moon\, this is our mirth day\, and the last day of boyhood. We will mark this through slaughter. Then\, while fasting\, fathers and sons will make the short hike to our campsite\, learning some basic wilderness skills along the way. Once in camp\, we will wait for sunset before breaking our fast and circling up for a thorough grounding in the basics of religious practice and an exploration of manhood as it relates to our experience as Muslims living in the West. \nDay 2: The day of the full moon\, this is the day of transition. Resuming our fast\, we make our way to our final campsite just a few miles short of the summit. While the sun is out\, our sons may not speak other than to communicate need. This is the time for fathers to pass on what they will freely and without interruption. Upon making camp\, we will await sunset at which point we break our fast and our sons may speak. This is their time to respond to all they’ve heard and to seek clarity in preparation for their Night Journey. \nUpon the rising of the full moon\, our sons will summit the mountain. Fathers will remain at camp. \nDay 3: The day after the full moon\, this is the day of receiving. We will resume our fast and our sons\, having returned from the mountaintop as men\, will lead us down and off the mountain. DESCRIPTION:a live-aboard adventure just for women \n \nThere is a floating home waiting for you and your friends in the frigid spring waters of Lake Powell. \nYou can play pirate as you pilot your houseboat into the hidden coves and nooks of the gnarled shoreline. If it’s not your turn at the wheel\, head down below deck for a nap. Or step into the full kitchen to prepare a meal with your mates. Take a shower in one of two full bathrooms\, or get up top and let the wind blow through your hair. \nBecause this is your lake. Head into open water or drop anchor off a sheltered beach and enjoy the solitude while reveling in the company of your sisters. Pitch a tent and spend the night on the water’s edge. Or slip back into one of the comfortable berths and let the current rock you to sleep. \nYour choice. You and your sisters will collaborate on an itinerary that can include boating\, swimming\, fishing\, hiking\, rock climbing\, and camping. Or you can just relax with a DVD and some popcorn. \nBefore dawn on the morning of Thursday\, April 2nd\, our shuttle will take you and your friends on an eight-hour drive from southern California to the Wahweap Marina in Arizona. Once there\, we’ll load the food and gear that you provide onto the 53-foot houseboat that you will call home for the next three nights and three days.
