DESCRIPTION:Men and women 13+ \nAll creeds welcome \nAdventure Score: 2 \nLake Tahoe’s Desolation Wilderness is an alpine wonderland of massive conifers and gorgeous\, stony pools of stunning blue refreshment. \nThis is world-class backpacking and we’re taking you along with six of our growing Alpine goats! \nThey’re getting stronger\, but they’re still young and we’ll need your help leading\, feeding\, and just generally loving on these adorable and hardworking critters. Each participant will be assigned one goat for at least one day\, allowing for a bonding and wilderness husbandry experience like no other. \nThese are our most affectionate and personable little goats\, handpicked from the D&T Camp One herd. They will leave quite the impression\, God willing\, but this will also be one of their longest outings to date and they will absolutely need your guidance and support. \nWe’re not going too far\, but we are going hard. It’s only 5 miles to the Upper Velma Lake\, but make no mistake: we’ll work for it. \nThis is an out-and-back trail with lots of climbing and some brutal switchbacks on the first day. We’ll need an early start to beat the summer heat. We know that with hardship there is ease\, and in this case the payoff is glorious. \nAt the end of all that work are some of the prettiest little lakes you ever will see and that’s where we’ll spend the next two nights\, God willing. We’ll explore\, swim\, fish (don’t forget your license!)\, and just take in the refreshment of radiant sunshine\, clean air\, and cool water. With goats! \nWe’re opening this adventure up to some of our younger participants with the understanding that they have the maturity to take direction and behave responsibly. And to make the trip easier for those coming from a distance\, we are including a free airport shuttle and overnight stay Friday June 27th at D&T Camp One in Placerville\, about 1.5 hours from the trailhead. \nIncluded: \n\nOvernight accommodations and meal at Dust and Tribe Camp One (optional)\nFree airport shuttle\nTwo nights of camping alongside the Velma Lakes\nPoint-by-point itinerary\, packing list\, and personalized assistance with logistics\nCommemorative D&T keepsake to honor our time together\nBABY GOATS!!!\nNew friends and a lifetime of memories!\n\nYou are responsible for your food\, transportation\, clothing\, and gear (limited rentals are available). \nBook your spot with a $190 deposit that is fully refundable up to 30 days prior to our trip (refund deadline Thursday 5/29/2025). \n\n \nDon’t want to hassle with food? When he saw a fire and said to his family: Stay here- indeed\, I have perceived a fire. Perhaps I can bring you a torch or find at the fire some guidance.” (Q20:9-10) \nThis summer we are bringing the young men and male elders of Islah LA to Lake Tahoe’s Desolation Wilderness for a backpacking trip where we will search for guidance and meaning in the signs that God has placed therein. \nWhen Moses sought the fire\, may God’s peace be upon him\, he was tasked with a mission to speak truth to power. He would have to face the despotic Pharaoh\, but not alone. God gave him miracles\, a shape-shifting staff\, a blazing hand\, but nothing more heartening to Moses than the blessing of his brother’s company. \nThere are oppressive forces at work within each of us and there are innumerable enemies without\, all conspiring to divert us from the Straight Path\, the path wherein we come to recognize the fullness of our responsibility before God. We are leaving our families behind for the mysteries and tribulation of the wilderness to seek the Fire’s Song\, the inspiration that Moses found. And together\, we will act on that inspiration in fraternity and without fear. \nBut we need your help. \nWe have 10 men signed up and ready to go. There are fathers and sons\, men who were formerly incarcerated\, and community leaders all banding together for a mystical expedition. But this is a community on the edge\, where the demands of inner-city life siphon energy and resources to such an extent that it’s hard to prioritize a backpacking trip. \nDust and Tribe and Islah LA are committed\, with God’s permission\, to alleviating any financial or logistical barriers to participation. We are willing to absorb any and all costs associated with this adventure\, but that is not a sustainable approach if we are to continue partnering with the communities that need the Fire’s Song the most. \nIn addition to the inspiration and fraternity that will come of spending time together in conifer forests surrounded by walls of granite\, participants will learn essential wilderness skills putting them in touch with the legacy of our ancestors: basic navigating using the sun and stars\, identifying wild edibles\, clearing a campsite\, purifying water\, and the disposing of waste in a backcountry environment. All gear and food will be provided in addition to the support of two trip leaders\, both of whom are certified Wilderness First Responders. \nWe are asking for those with the means to consider acting as patrons of the wild\, Dust and Tribe sponsors willing to offset trip expenses. \nGod’s reward for a good intention is guaranteed by Him.
