D&T Treks: Lost Coast Backpacking

Spend Memorial Day weekend where the forest meets the sea!

God willing, we’ll share five days and four nights together in the blush of spring along one of the most remote areas of Northern California, the legendary Lost Coast.

Getting there is a journey all its own. Considered too costly for state highway or county road builders to establish routes through the area, this is the most undeveloped and remote portion of California’s coast.

But don’t let that intimidate you. Five hours from San Francisco and nearly 12 hours from Los Angeles, you can just think of it as a fabulous roadtrip with a backpacking adventure thrown in for good measure.

And if the promise of sleeping in redwood groves, breezy ocean overlooks, and combing black sand beaches gets your heart pounding like the waves of the Great Pacific, you don’t want to miss this.

We’ll spend our first day (Thursday) staging our arrival camp and getting our parking and transportation arrangements squared away. We’ll hit the trail early Friday morning, God willing, averaging between 4-8 miles daily as we make our way north along the southern portion of the Lost Coast trail. With God’s help and permission, we plan to exit the trail well before noon on Monday morning in time to get back on the road for the long trip home.

It should be noted that the views won’t be the only thing taking your breath away. It gets easier, but the first day is a doozy with some impressive elevation gain. We know that with hardship there is ease and between climbs we’ll have plenty of opportunities to relax in secluded coves, dip our toes in the ocean, and marvel at the ancient redwoods that have stood here for centuries.

We think you can do it. You’ll really have no choice once you’re on the trail, and if you are questioning your abilities, book early and start conditioning. It’s not hard to improve our strength and endurance. Much more important is our sense of determination and commitment.

That’s the magic of an adventure like this. Cut off from all of our creature comforts and in the middle of California’s most remote stretch of coastline, we’ll only have what we’ve brought and one another. We’re forced into growth, community, and a revitalized perspective.

We start helping each other now.
