Long ago, along the banks of New York’s Lake Chautauqua, there convened a great festival of ideas. Preachers and hucksters and performers and educators of all manner vied for the attention of those camped nearby. Presentations were animated. Conversation was lively.
Edifying and refreshing, word of what was happening on Lake Chautauqua spread until similar festivals sprung up all throughout rural North America in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
The movement lost steam as our love of discussion and learning gave way to a pursuit of more passive entertainment.
