Point Reyes is one of the moodiest places we know. Cool, damp, sometimes windy, and often overcast, it’s a place for contemplation and exploration.
Winter can also be wet, but don’t let that scare you. Being outside is always an exercise in coming to terms with our condition. And while we understand that God holds all the cards, we’ve done everything we can to stage a remarkable coastal wilderness adventure.
It’s worth the risk because the wilderness diversity of Point Reyes is unparalleled. Five broad ecosystems can be explored within its boundaries: prairies and grasslands, sand dunes and wetlands, marshes and rivers, forests, and the vast, rugged coastline of the great Pacific.
This is trekking at its most mysterious.
Our camp is just under five miles from the trailhead in one of the more forested areas of Point Reyes, selected to provide a modicum of shelter from winter’s weather, insha Allah.
But who knows? Maybe we’ll get clear skies. And so close to the new moon of Sha’ban, the stars could be absolutely breathtaking.
If you’re ready to be lulled to sleep by the wind in the trees and the ethereal calls of Tule elk, this is the adventure for you.
