D&T Kin: Southwest Sojourn

All creeds welcome
Adventure Score: 2

Join us this summer for our longest, hottest, and most ambitious roadcamp ever!

Our caravan will take us through six states, five National Parks, and the indigenous lands of the Navajo, Hopi, and Zuni peoples. We’ll stop for coffee, gas, and groceries in places like Santa Fe, Taos, Durango, and Moab, and that’s just scratching the surface.

Because we’ll be logging nearly 3000 miles on this trip!

But you don’t have to. Join us at any point and call it quits when you’ve had enough!

For those wild enough to attempt the whole thing, here’s what’s going on:

We’ll depart from Camp One in Placerville, CA early Friday morning, July 11th. Our plan is to spend the night along the Kern River, casting our lines for a shot at some nice rainbow trout, insha Allah. We leave early the next morning for a long pull to the Grand Canyon where we will sleep adjacent to one of the world’s most renowned natural wonders. Sunday is very busy! We’ve got some water play planned, along with a visit to the cliff dwellings of the ancient Sinagua people, and a massive meteor impact sight, all before setting up camp near ancestral Hopi pueblos. Monday, July 14th finds us exploring Petrified Forest National Park before spending the night on Navajo land.

And we’re just getting started!

Tuesday we’ll make camp at Bandelier National Monument, an area remarkable for playing host to at least 23 different groups of indigenous peoples. Petroglyphs and the remains of ancient dwellings abound throughout. We’ll see what we have time to discover before passing through Santa Fe and making our way to the banks of the Rio Grande River where we will spend the next two nights catching our breath. This will be our base camp from which we’ll explore the Taos Pueblo and Dar al Islam in Abiquiu, a retreat center and tribute to American Islamic idealism.

This is the terminus. The end of the road, so to speak. Nothing left to do but go home. Some of you might retrace our route, heading back the way we came.

But that’s not what we’ll be doing!

We’re heading north, to camp at Navajo Lake, the second largest body of water in New Mexico. We’ll need our rest, because we’ve got a really long drive on Saturday, July 19th, that will take us through Durango, Mesa Verde National Park, Moab, Arches National Park, and Great Basin National Park before pitching our tents for one last night on the shore of Cave Lake in Nevada.

Will there be showers? Sometimes. Cell phone reception? Mostly.

Will you love your bed more than ever once you get home? Almost certainly.

But when you fall asleep, it’s quite possible that your dreams will no longer measure up to your memories.
